I have slimmed down to a size 20 which means I can buy a swim suit from Tesco. The body is impossibly long but as I am a designer,  I have taken 4 inches of of the crotch to make fit me and stop some very embarrassing exposure. So now it fits at the bottom but my 40 GGs are one bounce away from doing the can can for the public.  Sigh.

In recent moans, being honest about my rants, I have looked at “shapewear”. And in a recent article by Margert Bognerief expounds on the lack of fit to puropse design.  Instead of plus size designed for a plus size body we have size 6 scaled for size 24. Gok Kwan and Spanx making girdles for thin people. I.E. because they don’t have plus size bulges, it sits right and does the job it was designed for. But try and find anywhere that stocks anything above a size 20 for the people who actually need it. Because the advertisers and the TV shows tell you if you want to look sexy or have a high street dress to look half way descent then you must wear a push up bra,  thigh slimming pants and a waist sincher. Why? Because the dress was designed initially to look good on a size six.  Not you. Then, even the size six is wearing shapewear. The dress is not fit to purpose of you have to do all that as a size six to look good in it.

The designer Catherine Clavering in an interview discussing disability and diversity in lingerie, admits that even she does not design for her own needs citing also the complaints of some of her customers; gusset width,  positioning of seams the hell of non-fitting underwear…

This and constant experimentation leads me to the conclusion that what is out there is not fit for purpose.  What is the point of design a garment that you the designer can’t wear?

I know this is my blog where I am supposed to big up my own products and sell sell sell… But we need to radically redesign basic underwear and the concepts around them. Throw away the book and get back to basic questions:
1. Can you take it off to pee easily?
2. Is it comfortable for long periods of time?
3. Does it fall off or roll down when you sit or walk long distances?
4. Does it flatter your shape without pain?

My designs have been slowly mutating as the feedback comes in. In response I have created The Plain Jane which is the basis of all my patterns for knickers. (Pictures to follow) There is not a straight line in them. The seams and fit is closer to Victorian jackets than modern panties. They are designed for to the above purposes and they are my most comfy, secure, and sexy knickers. If only I had time to make more for me!

When I get back from the beach it is time to show you all something new!

I think the hardest thing about being on my own is that no one has n my back but me. When I make a leap of faith there is no one to catch me. But on the other hand that was the situation when I was married. At least now I can leap and there isn't some one holding me back other than myself. It's been very very scary but things have gotten better and not just for me.  my Meifod at no 20 may hate me but at least now they have planning permission for their extension which they previously did not have.  Now onto the lawyer to fix the problems with the trespasses.

Something I have begun to notice when searching on shopping sites like Etsy.com or Ebay are the number sellers who come up in the results when typing in the tag “plus size”. But closer inspection shows that the seller has ONE item in a size US14/UK16 or worse yet, a size US12/UK14, and thus they qualify themselves as Plus Size specialists.

WTF?

The common range of plus sizes goes from a size UK18 – 32 (XL – 5XL) with the most popular plus sizes are 18-20 and 22-24. I really don’t see how these sellers can advertise themselves as selling plus size when they sell only one or two items and the size is on the cusp! It is outrageous! It is humiliating enough to know that as an averaged sized plus size woman you can’t walk into the major high street chains and find anything in there. Worse yet now we have sellers telling plus sized women that they wont be catered for unless they are at the smaller edge of being plus size. And then when you try to order an item to be told at checkout the item is permanently out of stock! Those of us who do design and manufacture plus size and being overwhelmed and hidden by the plethora of what feels like those jumping on the band wagon for mercenary profit.

Likewise I am bewildered by the recent attitude by the BBC towards the recent London Plus Size Fashion Weekend. The main story reported that many shops now included plus sizes by going up to a size 18 and SOME went higher… But then the interviews with the organizers and the comments from the morning hosts were focused on health issues and talking about obesity. The questions to the organizers were barbed to obtain odd responses. The subtitle version, which often did not match the content of the interview at all, even stated the importance of loosing weight was more desirable than being plus size.

It is every woman’s right to feel confidant and good about themselves.

When did plus size only become defined to be under a size 16 and the top end a size 18? Despite showing what vast market desire and need for good quality and well designed items there is to be told as a consumer that it is a shameful thing and to be avoided by loosing weight as fast as possible.

My thoughts on gun control.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The second amendment's purpose was to create a police force before the concept existed. It's purpose is to restrict the powers of the national government, leaving the details of law to each state. A person's ability to create a militia must be approved by the state. It is not a right. Gun ownership laws vary from state to state. Where local state armies no longer exist, State Troopers and Police force have taken over that role.

Gun ownership; self defense and defense of property, hunting or provision, sport, defense of nation.

In first world countries an effective police force is all that is necessary. Death rate due to violent crime in countries where gun ownership is highly controlled is exceptionally low. Gun crime next to unheard of. In my family (5 siblings) EVERYONE has been assaulted at gunpoint, but I have not as I live in the United Kingdom. I have not ever been assaulted with any kind of weapon other than bravado despite living and working in London on and off for 25 years.

Also, when the G-20 was in town and I saw 15 buses of armed police roll down Carson St. I realized that civil liberties can be wiped out at the drop of a hat and that no amount of personal armament would be effective. (a friend in the US)

We have riots and protests here in the UK too. People have died due to police brutality. But not from being shot with real guns. Police use riot gear, shields, batons and yes some do have guns with rubber bullets (which can fatal wound and have caused horrible damage). Those armed police... were they out to get you or were they there to protect other citizens civil liberties to right over destruction of property and business and not be looted by gangs (unapproved private militias). What escalations are the state forced to go to in order to protect civil liberties? Things are clearly no right when civilians are hurt by police nor when destruction happens instead of peaceful protest.

7 years ago I would have said that private citizens no longer required to hunt for their existence, but that has changed. But that is also what hunting licensees are for. You can't buy an AK47 in the UK and license it for duck hunting. Likewise "sport shooting" is highly regulated to official international registered sport contests such as the Olympics. You need to justify ownership. That seems to be lacking in all American arguments. NO ONE should own a hand gun for any reason. Hunting rifles - how many do you need? Surely not more than one. There is no reason ever to own any form of automatic.

Defense of the nation. Zombie Apocalypse. After all you need all those guns to shoot them in the head because that's the only thing that works. First Zombies aren't real. And it wouldn't work anyway because you would have to hit the amygdala every time because that's the only functioning part of the brain which is too difficult, requires multiple kill shots before you get bit anyway. The only way to kill a Zombie is with a chainsaw.

Why I don’t support either Black Friday or Cyber Monday. They are purely American phenom that is now beginning to infect other cultures. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. The behavior encouraged in people to enact violence and the worst treatment of each other in competition for toys or TVs or mobile phones is repugnant. It’s the day after Americans as one nation no matter creed, race, sexual orientation or position to be thankful for all that they have and the freedoms they enjoy; friends, family, all that makes life important and worth sharing. Then to indulge in an orgy of consumerism gone mad in the name of another holiday whose purpose is to celibate the concept of peace and brotherhood between all peoples…

This whole season… runs and promotes the economy and is a necessary part of good national fiscal health. I depend upon the revenue of sales too but will not set sales on those days. I think that there can be honor in trade and dignity in customer service and valuing and respecting clientele. Rather than feed the hysteria I would treat all with dignity and respect. That is partly why I started this business so that women of larger sizes had the access and right to high quality lingerie. To that I hope to be able to have at least one sale per month – on everything equally.

How do you feel about Black Friday/Cyber Monday?

I have made my first Etsy treasury inspired by BBC One’s program The Paradise. In the program the heroine attempts to unite the small lone craftsmen into a collective where they show their products as one coherent outfit and then offer 10% off if a customer buys any item from each craftsman. This where sites like Etsy and FAB and many others are trying to promote the small business person is a GREAT idea! Getting agreement from each crafts-person is well… it did not work for our heroine.

BUT!!! I LOVE what other people are doing and creating! And what The Paradise was able to demonstrate to it’s customers was how to put an outfit together. Not just highlight one single product but to demonstrate how it can all come together to make a sure fire look. Just like fashion magazine shoots and stylists do.

Etsy has this app called Treasury where anyone can put together a collection of stuff they like. It doesn’t have to be themed and often is only loosely fitted together. I feel this can be used to really show the best of a lot of hardworking craftsmen and craftswomen to show what else is there. I have made my first one themed on 50 Shades of Grey – a bit hokey, but hopefully it will find a large enough audience to provide some feedback on the idea of treasury as styling.

Here it is! My first Treasury!

My first treasury!

Please! tell me what you think!!!

Ok….

Where have we been? Well, the interns have gone back to uni and I have been working on new product lines and updating all the fabrics to SILK! But mostly I have been product testing … in Greece.

They definitely work ladies and gentleman and can take a hell of a lot of stress too! If you want a product that will rip from your body… sorry. BUT the one hook back clasp undoes very nicely when and only when you want it too!

ANYWAY!

December will see RavenDreams open for business for 6 months! I want to thank all the people who’s contributions have made this possible! Especially the strangers on the street (practically) whom I have accosted with a tape measure! All of your help, patience and advice has been invaluable! So at this time of Thanksgiving – THANKS!

FOR ONE WEEK ONLY – THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS SALE 50% OFF ON EVERYTHING!

To use, go to http://www.etsy.com/shop/RavenDreamsLtd and when checking out apply coupon code: 6ETKKMER6NE4DCMS

Again – thank you!
